Here is a list of practices
and/or activities to avoid before you
meditate. This list will help you to achieve a deeper, more powerful, meditative
experience than you might otherwise have, by eliminating or adding certain
elements.
The most important aspect of
meditation is calmness and serenity, with no intrusions, bright light or noise.
Choose a place where you know you’ll be comfortable and left
alone.
Stay away from telephones,
t.v. and any other electronic apparatus that has a screen…or noise. If you
choose to listen to some gentle, calming music, a few minutes before you begin,
that might help you to loosen up and get into the your meditation groove.
Stay away from people for at
least 15 minutes before you meditate. People come with all sorts of
energies---emotional, psychological, even spiritual---at any particular time of
day; you’ll want your own energies to
remain calm and not disturbed by outside frequencies.
Try not to eat anything. But
if you’re feeling hungry, have some fruit or a cookie. Stay away from
stimulants, such as coffee or even tea, unless
it is herbal. It’s definitely not a good idea to eat any meat, eggs or cheese. All
in all, the very best thing to ingest is some purified water. Always drink a half glass of water before you meditate. Try
to meditate long after you have done any
kind of physical exertion---at least an hour. You want your body to be very
calm and relaxed.
You might want to do
something creative before you meditate. Make a drawing, write a poem or a few
inventive lines; play something gentle on a musical instrument, if you’re so
inclined. By delving into your creative realm, you awaken those deep, hidden
places where your soul resides. When you meditate, it is your soul that is most
conscious; it overpowers your
emotions, your mind and your body, so that you are in perfect sync with your
higher Self.
Do some deep breathing to
slow down your system and fill your entire being with empowering, spiritual, breath.
Ring a little bell, light a
candle or some incense, to bring your subconscious into the moment---the moment
where it shines within you.
Enjoy your journey.
